Inlet Meadow Yard is an independent magazine born from a conviction that rural Japan is one of the world's most important — and most overlooked — places. We tell its stories with patience, care, and ink on paper.
Inlet Meadow Yard began in 2018 when editor-in-chief Nao Fujisaki and photographer Ren Watanabe spent three months living in a centuries-old farmhouse in Gifu Prefecture while documenting its restoration.
The notes they kept, the meals they shared with local residents, and the landscapes they photographed became Volume 1 — produced on a home printer and sent to fewer than 200 people. Within six months, demand had grown to 4,000 requests. By Volume 4, they had a team, a printer in Kyoto, and subscribers on every continent.
Japan's countryside is in transition. Villages shrink. Young people move to cities. Ancient trades thin out. We are not here to lament this, but to document it honestly — and to find, in that documentation, an argument for why what remains is worth protecting.
Every issue places equal weight on the landscape and the person within it. The farmer is inseparable from the field. The potter is inseparable from the clay. The village is inseparable from the festival that still fills its streets each autumn. That interconnection is the story we return to, season after season.

Good rural journalism takes time. We return to the same places across seasons and years. Trust is built slowly. The best stories only become visible to those who wait.
We believe the printed page is a form of respect for the subject. It says: this story deserves permanence. It asks the reader: are you ready to give it your full attention?
Each issue follows a journey that begins months before print. We first scout regions, meeting with local historians, farmers, craftspeople, and preservationists. These conversations become the foundation of story selection. Once themes are chosen, reporters and photographers spend weeks embedded in communities, capturing not just moments but the texture of daily life.
Back in Tokyo, our design and editorial teams move slowly. Stories are fact-checked against multiple sources. Photographs are examined frame by frame. Captions are written to reveal context, not state the obvious. Typography is set by hand. The result is printed on 100% recycled paper with soy-based inks, using carbon-neutral production methods.

We are an independent magazine. We do not accept advertising, sponsored content, or editorial partnerships that could compromise our voice. Our revenue comes exclusively from subscriptions and product sales — meaning we answer only to our readers, not advertisers or corporate sponsors.
Every story is edited for accuracy and contextualized with appropriate sourcing. We correct errors promptly and publicly. We disclose conflicts of interest. We do not aggregate stories from the internet — we go to the source, always. We pay our contributors fairly and on time. We believe editorial integrity is the only currency that matters in journalism.
Inlet Meadow Yard is owned and operated by its founders, Nao Fujisaki and Ren Watanabe, who remain editorially responsible for every issue. We are registered as a Benefit Corporation with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, legally bound to balance commercial success with social and environmental responsibility.
